At this time of the year, as the grass grows rapidly and pollen counts soar, we tend to see a lot of dogs with “canine hayfever” which results in itchy skin and allergies. Unfortunately, when dogs develop allergies, it is their skin that is predominantly affected and they can become very itchy and inflammed.
Many possible allergens can cause skin reactions in dogs. The main ones being grasses, pollen, flea saliva , dietary components and plants. Dogs suffering from allergies generally show the following symptoms:
– Itchy feet that they lick at.
– Infected ears.
– Itchy, red skin that they scratch at.
There is a lot we can do to help these pets, so please come in and see us for advice.
Check your garden for the following itchy plants that will also irritate their skin:
Moses -in-a-cradle (Tradescantia spathacea)
Purple Heart (Tradescantia pallida)
Wandering Jew (Tradescantia zebrina)
