As you would expect, Rob and the team are well qualified to deal with the complete range of animal ailments, from various sicknesses to injuries. We are also  here to implement and advise on a wide range of preventive measures such as  parasite control and disease prevention. We recommend pets have a thorough  physical examination at least once a year (and twice yearly  in our Geriatric pets … see “Geriatric Medicine”).

Vaccinations:

At McDowall Vet Practice we use the most advanced and effective vaccines available on the market. This gives your pets the best possible protection and has meant that we can reduce the frequency of vaccination for some canine diseases to every third year. It is important though that the highly contagious canine cough viruses are still vaccinated for annually. We also recommend performing a Complete Wellness Assessment at the time of vaccination. New Puppy and Kitten Consultations:

We offer free registration consultations for any new (animal) additions to your family! This is a great opportunity for us be introduced to your new kitten or puppy and check them over for you. Our free check also comes with lots of information and  advice to help you keep your fur babies happy and healthy.

Geriatric Medicine:

One of the most important areas of work in our practice, is looking after our senior patients as they start to age. We want to ensure that they maintain a full and enjoyable life and maximise their senior years. We offer a free Senior club for any pet over the age of seven, which allows those pets to get a free check-up and urinalysis six months after their vaccination, and gives owners a discount on any blood tests that their pets require.

Cardiac Evaluations:

Some breeds of dogs and cats are predisposed to various heart diseases such as mitral valve regurgitation, cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Fortunately, these days we’re able to diagnose these diseases early on and so treat them more successfully. We use a combination of physical examinations, ECG monitoring, cardiac auscultation and radiography to  evaluate heart patients thoroughly. Further detailed evaluation can be performed by a veterinary specialist cardiologist, who we can arrange to visit the practice to minimize stress for your pet.

Weight Reduction Programs:

We encourage clients to bring their pets in to the surgery on a regular basis for free regular weighings to assist with weight management. We can also provide professional advice on weight management and weight reduction for your pet if required.

Pet Identifications and Microchips:

It is important to clearly and unmistakably identify all pets. We provide pet tags and microchips to assist in this task. We have an excellent range of quality tags that can be engraved with the relevant details. You can view the range next time you are at the Surgery.  Microchips, are small (about the size of a rice grain), inert devices that are implanted painlessly under the skin (between the shoulder blades). Each microchip has a unique barcode number that remains with that pet for life. We use international  chips (15-digit) that are now used and recognised worldwide. The microchip number and owner details are recorded on central databases, accessible 24 hours a day. By reading the chip with a hand-held scanner, the animal and its owner can be identified. Most veterinary practices, welfare centres and local government pounds carry microchip readers. This ensures pets are being re-homed quickly and much more efficiently than in the past. The Animal Management Act of 1 July 2009 has made it compulsory for young dogs and cats to be microchipped before they are 12 weeks old.

Exotic Pet Medicine:

We offer a full veterinary service for exotic pets and have close relationships with local bird and exotic specialists. Please ask to see Dr Garreth or Dr Gemma for your exotic pet needs.

Behavioural Advice:

Some of the most common reasons for pets being euthanized, abandoned or re-homed are unacceptable behavioural problems. We offer comprehensive advice and treatment in this area. Where appropriate, cases requiring more detailed work are referred to trainers or behavioural specialists.
